The New Territories district of Hong kong comprise of nine districts namely: Islands, Kwai Tsing (Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi), North, Sai Kung, Shatin, Tai Po, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun, and Yuen Long.
Vast areas of the New Territories remain rural areas. Modernization attempts became extensive in the late 1970s where many new towns were built to accommodate the overspill from the urbanized areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.
